"Old Mac” is over 300 years old and is thought to be the largest Douglas Fir in McMinnville, Oregon. It has been said by some long-time members of our community that the tree was once used as a meeting site for Native Americans of Grand Ronde and those to the south for their counsels. The large burls on the side of the tree were caused by the warming fires built by the Native Americans to keep their council members comfortable on a chilly day. Previous property owners found many arrowheads and artifacts on the premises that support this legend. The stately Douglas Fir is now registered as a Heritage Tree with the Yamhill County Historical Society. Old Mac marks the beginning of the Canyon walking paths, with a trail leading around its large trunk from the street, across the creek, to the forested acres behind the estates.
